How To Measure For Blinds

Our premium Roman Blinds are crafted using high-quality Roman Blind Tape, which securely holds the fibreglass rod essential for creating each elegant fold. The blind is reinforced with machine stitching, featuring a single line across its width for enhanced stability and durability. An aluminium bottom bar adds weight, ensuring a sleek, professional appearance.

For those opting for Blackout Lining, it’s important to note that the stitching may result in tiny ‘pin holes’ of light, which is a normal characteristic of this type of blind.

Essential Measuring Tips

Always use a metal tape measure for accuracy, as fabric or plastic tapes can stretch and lead to measurement errors. Before placing your order, contact us to check stock levels, ensuring timely delivery of your custom Roman blinds.

It will be necessary to fit the blind outside the recess if:

  • The recess is less than 7.5cm [3″] deep (to ensure the blind clears the handles)
  • The window is not straight ie. The width or height varies by more than 2.5cm [1″] (to avoid too much light seeping through)
  • The window opens inwards

MEASURING FOR AN INSIDE RECESS ROMAN BLIND

To be sure of the best possible fit, take time to measure your window carefully.

Measuring the width

Measure the width of your window recess from wall to wall. Take measurements at three different points just in case your window is not square and write down the smallest measurement. This measurement is called ‘Inside Recess’ (See Fig. 1). A small deduction (1.5cm) for clearance will be taken off the width by us from your supplied measurements to ensure your blind can operate smoothly and fit within the recess.

Measuring the drop

Measure the height of your window recess from top to sill. Take measurements at three different points just in case your window is not square and write down the smallest measurement.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much overlap should I allow for outside recess fitting?

We recommend extending the blind approximately 10cm on all sides of the recess for optimal light control and aesthetics.

What’s the minimum recess depth required for inside fitting?

A minimum recess depth of 7.5cm (3″) is recommended for inside fitting to ensure the blind clears any window handles.

How do I measure for bay windows?

Measure each section of the bay window separately, treating each as an individual blind. Consider using outside recess fitting for a more uniform look.

What if my window isn’t perfectly square?

This is common. Always measure at three points and use the smallest measurement to ensure your blind fits within the recess.

Can I install Roman blinds on UPVC windows?

Yes, but you may need to use special fittings. Consult with our customer service team for specific recommendations.

How do I account for radiators or other obstructions under the window?

Measure to the top of the obstruction instead of the window sill for the drop measurement. Consider outside recess fitting if the obstruction significantly impacts the blind’s operation.

What’s the typical deduction made for inside recess fitting?

We typically deduct 1.5cm from the width measurement to ensure smooth operation within the recess.

How accurate do my measurements need to be?

Aim for accuracy to the nearest millimeter. Even small discrepancies can affect the fit and function of your Roman blinds.
